New features and improvements now available in EMSE 5.6.1

  • Reader support for BDF+ format (24-bit EDF+ with annotations)
  • 2D mapping of coherence links, also including links for:
    • Cross-spectral density
    • Imaginary part of coherency
    • Imaginary part of cross-spectral density
  • Imaginary part of coherency (normalized) and imaginary part of cross-spectral density  (unnormalized)
  • Imaginary part of coherency (normalized) and imaginary part of cross-spectral density  (unnormalized)
  • Coherence export to Excel with one worksheet per “coherence reference” • SaveAs2 batch script command for large continuous files with an IIR filter in the pipeline • Batch script commands for integration with FreeSurfer cortical and BEM surfaces
  • AppendFilter batch script command
  • Use an .aux file to rename channels at the level of raw data (without altering the original  data)
  • PLA = Phase-Locking Angle in time-frequency analysis
    • PLA is the phase angle associated with the PLV = Phase-Locking Value, a.k.a. PLF  = Phase-Locking Factor
  • Topographic mapping with user-defined frequency bands for FFT and PSD
    • Multiple sets of user-defined frequency bands (saved as user preferences)
    • Includes standard IFCN (= International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiology) and IPEG (= International Pharmaco-EEG Society) frequency band definitions — https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31501011/
  • Export Excel XLSX format:
    • XLSX result generated by Utilities | Customize peak output
    • Average time series for a specified time range
    • Power spectral density for a specified frequency range
    • Time-frequency for specified time and frequency ranges (one sheet per channel)
    • SaveAsExcel batch script command for average time series and power spectral  density
  • ECG trigger type added to Edit | Events | Trigger Search for much improved detection of  R-peaks
  • HRV batch script command adds IBI (inter-beat interval), HR (“instantaneous” heart  rate), and logHR (log instantaneous heart rate = negative log IBI) channels which enable: o Event-related HR analysis in the time domain (just like ERPs)
    • HRV analysis in the frequency domain
    • Cross-spectral analysis of ECG with concurrent EEG
  • AutoMark command for automatically marking:
    • Blinks
    • Clean segments
    • HEOG segments
  • OutliersFromGoodData command:
    • Trained on examples of Good data from your lab
    • Automatically marks outliers based on a user-specified false rejection probability  threshold (e.g., p = 0.001) = the probability of marking Good data as an outlier
  • Event Overlay with AddResponses mode (adds behavioral responses to events)
  • Align and merge LiveTrack eye tracking data with EEG (SynchTimeSeries command)
  • Ricoh MEG support (file reading, mapping, and source analysis)
  • Restored user interface for Epilepsy ASPIRE
  • Improved management of RAM when saving continuous data with digital IIR filters
  • Group level spatial component analysis ➔ individual level continuous data
    • Spatial components derived from concatenated averages across participants and  experimental conditions at the group level may be used to derive virtual  channels of continuous data at the individual level (e.g., for PSD or TF analysis)
  • AddFilter batch script command to automate addition of PPM filters
  • Restored user interface for Epilepsy ASPIRE tool
  • Rename channels at the level of raw data (without altering the original raw data file)
  • EMSE integration with FreeSurfer on the same (or different) machine via batch script
    • FreeSurfer runs in the WSL = Windows Subsystem for Linux
    • Co-registered cortical and BEM surfaces for mapping and source estimation
    • Visualization of labeled cortical areas
